It’s a good question. And the answer is…no idea. Hmm. This is gonna be a short blog post.
For the past year and a bit, we’ve been living life for us – and it has been amazing! We’ve visited 28 countries and traveled over 100,000 km. We’ve now been back in Canada for about 6 weeks, with no existing plans for another significant trip. Our original idea was to spend the summer in Canada, then maybe head to South America in the fall (their spring) for another 5-6 months. However, after a year + with no real permanent address, we’re ready to have a home base again. So that raises two questions…where? and what will we do there?
We’re spending the summer roadtripping around Ontario and the Maritimes, visiting friends and family. As for places to settle down, the Maritimes are beautiful, but the winters can be tough. Christine has spent her entire life living in Ontario. It has also been Trevor’s home for the majority of the past 20+ years. While most people (including us previously) choose where they live based on their career, we have a rare opportunity to do the opposite. We can choose a place where we want to live, then figure out how to pay the bills once we get there. Our favourite part of Canada has always been the west coast. In particular we’ve loved the Okanagan Valley, so that’s where we’re thinking of moving.
The Okanagan has great weather, mountains (or at least foothills), lakes, and the best wine region in North America (in our opinion). What more does anyone need? Since we’ve never spent more than a few days in the Okanagan at one time, we’re going to spend at least a month there in the fall to see if it’s really a place we want to live.
So what will we do there? That’s definitely a work in progress. Returning to our careers in investment banking and equity research isn’t something we’re considering. We need to find a path that we are more passionate about and that provides us with a bit more independence. In the past, we have sacrificed many things for our careers, so finding better balance is a priority when determining our new path.
We’d love to do something entrepreneurial, and are mulling over various ideas. It doesn’t have to be something big or crazy, although if it turns into something bigger and crazier, that’s ok too. We just want to start off doing something manageable that allows us to be self-sufficient. So far we’ve been looking at everything from real estate investments to franchise opportunities to tech start-ups, but it’s all very preliminary. Our experience ranges from engineering/project management to mining to agriculture to finance, and now tourism, travel writing, and social media. Over the next few months we hope to narrow our focus in the hopes of finding one or two opportunities that we can dive into head-first. We’re leaning towards something in wine and/or tourism, but we’ll see.
And hey, if that doesn’t work out for us, it’ll be springtime in South America before too long…Hola!
